The Red Witch

Have you ever heard of a Red Witch?

A woman who menstruates with the full moon has historically been connected with medicine women, healers, oracles and Dulas. The full moon is usually associated with the fertility of the Earth, and many women ovulate with it; however, the Red Witch bleeds. Women who bleed with the full moon are known to birth ideas and change beyond child-rearing. Many women’s cycles change throughout life, and just because you aren’t a Red Witch now doesn’t mean you will never be. Many see the moon as symbolic of femininity. On average, the moon follows a 29-day cycle, similar to a woman’s menstrual cycle.

Coincidence? Maybe.

Magic? Definitely!

Six months ago, my partner at the time looked at me and said, “Isn’t it interesting that you always have your period on the full moon?” Something in me lit up.

Was it a coincidence? Maybe!

Do I now consider myself a Red Witch? Definitely!

As I navigate my newly recognized Red Witch identity, I’ve grown to embrace the humanity and humility it brings with it. Being in tune with your cycle means you are in sync with nature. To embrace your femininity is an act of courage; although it may not always seem like it, bleeding is a gift.

I wrote the following poem as an Ode to all the Red Witches:

Hibiscus tea,

red like menstruation,

a beautiful incantation

of floral feminine intuition.

Divination and lustful intoxication,

she bleeds with vibrancy.

Garnet around her neck,

love, loyalty, and respect

restorative communication,

full moon celebration.

A red witch,

birthing and nurturing herself,

a healer and dream seeker

bleeding for community,

an intoxicating vision

beyond fertilization.

Not as gentle and internal

as her sister,

with moonstone in her eyes,

she is the fire,

a flame burning bright.

The medicine woman,

the midwife

and wisdom keeper

of the night.
